Location Highlights:POPULAR DESTINATIONS - - ALCATRAZ ISLANDThis famous prison was once the chilling destination of maximum-security convicts. Alcatraz now sees hundreds of thousands more tourists per year than the total number of prisoners in its entire 29-year life as a federal penitentiary! Audio-assisted tours in several languages recount the history of the island and its famous inmate inhabitants: Machine Gun Kelley, Al Capone, Robert Stroud, "the Birdman of Alcatraz." On a clear day, the views of the San Francisco skyline and bridges alone are worth the crossing by ferryboat. - ANGEL ISLANDJust a quick ferry ride from Tiburon is Angel Island which you will find quite possibly the best view of the Bay Area from its peak, Mount Livermore (781 feet). The San Francisco skyline; the Golden Gate Bridge and the Sausalito waterfront; the East Bay and Mount Diablo--it's simply breathtaking. You can take a five-mile trail which circles the entire island, or take a scenic tram tour, paddle around in a kayak, or get tandem bikes for the whole family.- CARMELDistance: About 133 miles, or a 2 hour drive south Carmel's effervescent white beaches are as awe-inspiring today as they were when they first began attracting artists, many years ago. To view the best in beaches, foliage, forests, and mansions, take the renowned, scenic 17-Mile Drive toll road. - MONTEREYDistance: About 133 miles, or a 2 hour drive south In Monterey, you can walk the six-block stretch, and the 2-Mile Path of History showcases some of Monterey's lovely Victorian architecture. Monterey's main attraction is the country's largest aquarium, built on the border of one of the largest underwater canyons in the world. Monterey Bay Aquarium holds more than 350,000 specimens, including live jellyfish and an enclosed kelp forest. - NAPA VALLEY & SONOMA WINE COUNTRYDistance: The Wine Country is about 46 miles north of San Francisco Driving through wine country is as pleasurable as visiting some of the 250 wineries, som

Painted ladies all in a row, a golden bridge, steep hills overlooking a beautiful blue bay (when the fog isn't in) - this is San Francisco! What would the Ohlone Indians, who settled the area at least 15,000 years ago, think of it now? Their land was filled with abundant wildlife, native plants, and fish. Well, actually it still is, although some of the current "wild" life is of the human variety! San Francisco is inimitable, and its people revel in that uniqueness. That original Indian village vanished long ago. Millennia later early European settlers built a Spanish and Mexican pueblo for the few hundred people who settled there. That early colony then exploded into a metropolis overnight, fueled by gold fever.
Much of early San Francisco has been lost to fires and earthquakes, but the city's spirit survives and its people rebuild. These were and are people with a vision of the future. They left (and still leave) their marks and San Francisco thrives. Come, discover for yourself what makes "the City that knows how" so exceptional.
